Jr Jazz

Lily really wanted to play basketball with some girls from the ward/neighborhood so I signed her up for the team. I really had no expectations. I remember playing (and hating it) when I was a child but was excited for Lily. I must say it's really nice to be indoors watching the games. Her coach was a guy in our ward, Matt Montgomery. He was the perfect coach for Lily (and for me).  He was encouraging and positive at every practice and game and had the right attitude that this was supposed to be a growing experience. I really appreciate it as a parent that he made the effort to make it such a great experience for Lily. After the first few games I remembered why I didn't like basketball growing up...the tempers, aggression, fouling...I thought I was going to lose my mind watching these little girls with parents/coaching yelling and screaming at their kids and the tears! Those poor kids. It was crazy. They're in 3rd grade people. Luckily all the parents on our team were like me and were happy and cheered when the girls dribbled the ball down the court without a double dribble. Lily did great and was oblivious to most the drama which I'm grateful. All Lily wanted to do is shoot a basket during a game. The second to last game she made not only 1 shot but 2! It was so fun. I'm glad she was able to have such a positive experience. Her coach sent out an email at the end of the season and it sums up the experience perfectly.
"I just wanted to take a minute to say thanks for letting me coach your amazing girls this season. It was so much fun! When I was a kid, I dreamed of being a College Basketball Coach. Life had other plans, but I still love being around young people and watching them experience the game even for a moment. Some of you know, but just days before the season began, my brother unexpectedly passed away. I looked forward to our Tuesday night practices and games every week. It was a great escape and a regular reminder of all the good this life has to offer. So I wanted to say thank you for letting me be a part if this awesome team and getting to know each of your kids."
