{Tuesday, October 25th} West Maui

We arrived in Maui the night before and thanks to a four hour time change we were up at 5 am and ready to go so we decided to drive up to West Maui. The purpose of our drive was to find the Olivine Pools. So that was our first stop! They are these pools that are surrounded by lava that created a barrier to the raging ocean on the other side. I've never seen anything like it. These huge waves were crashing against the lava and spraying mist and sometimes creating waterfalls down the lava. But we were swimming (Andy snorkeling) in these warm pools a few feet away. It was beautiful. (Sorry, no pictures, only video.) Next stop was Nakalele Blowhole. The water was constantly streaming up and we were mesmerized as we stood there and watched it. There was also a heart shape cut out in the rock on the lookout on the other side. It's called West Maui, even though it seems like it should be called North Maui because we were on the Northern tip of the Island. The winds blow and the ocean is raging. With the cliff shoreline (we had to hike down to both of these places), turquoise water, and white water from the waves crashing against the rock, it is a breathtaking sight to see!
We continued driving around the Northern tip to Honolua Bay, a place where we've snorkeling before so we wanted to check it out again. The Bay was so calm (quite a contrast to the shore line we were at before) but it wasn't the clearest condition for snorkeling. But still a beautiful place to snorkel. The day was quickly flying by so we decided to go check on a few beaches. There were 3 beaches we were wanting to see (DT Fleming Beach, Napili Beach, and Ka'anapali Beach). We had been to Ka'anapali Beach before but not the other two. By this time the wind had picked up and the sun was hiding behind the clouds so we decided to call it a day and go get an early dinner on our way back to Kihei, where we were staying. We sat in the hot tub when we got back (the only time we went to the resort pool) and spent the rest of the evening planning our trip to Hana the next day.
