One specific childhood memory I have is making gingerbread houses at Christmastime. I remember my Mom making the gingerbread and getting the pattern out and cutting all the pieces and cooking it. I also remember it being so stinkin' heavy that the frosting couldn't hold the house together so we had to get the hot glue gun out. I don't know how my Mom had the patience, time, or desire to make these gingerbread houses from scratch when everyone else I knew made them out of graham crackers but I'm glad she did. I actually have a copy of her recipe and patterns to make it but when you have Costco's handy dandy Gingerbread House Kit it's hard for me to justify taking the time to make it when I have 3 little helpers to make it that much more time consuming. Maybe someday I'll make it from scratch when my kids are older and can actually help me.
So for FHE a few weeks ago we made our very first gingerbread house with the kids. Taylor had a hard time not eating the candy, especially the pink gumballs, but they all had so much fun with it. Ella loved eating the green frosting and Braden loved decorating the roof and the trees. Although the gingerbread house is still intact most of the candy has been eaten. ;)

Julie, I lucked out. My sweet husband is the one that gets out the gingerbread recipe and patterns to cut out the pieces. Yay! Home-made, and the kids love it. =)
